Prostitution/Solicitation

In the state of Ohio, solicitation, pandering and prostitution are all examples of illegal sex crimes that can result in serious penalties if convicted. Prostitiution - sometimes also referred to as solicitation - is the act of offering sexual services in exchange for something of value, usually money. Pandering, which is the act of recruiting someone for prostitution or soliciting customers for a prostitute (such as a pimp) is also illegal.

While most prostitutes are women with clients being men, it can also be reversed. Additionally, prostitution can also involve homosexual activity. Many clients are arrested in what are known as "sting operations". Basically, in this type of operation, an undercover cop is disguised as a prostitute and attempts to solicite potential customers. Once the client agrees to participate in the act of paying for sex, the person may either be arrested right there on the spot or once they walk inside a hotel room or pull into a parking lot.

Acts of prostitution and solicitation are also disguised as what is made to believe other places of business - such as massage parlors or escort agencies. On a regular basis, sting operations occur in these places as well, with cops posing as potential clients and then arresting those who go beyond the tested boundaries.

In Ohio, both the client and the prostitute can be aggressively prosecuted for prostitution. Those with no criminal past may suddenly find themselves being arrested and now having a world of problems open up before them because they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Depending on the specific situation, prostitution can be charged as either a misdemeanor or a felony. Aside from jail time, being convicted of a prostitution crime can result in fines, required counseling, and community service.
